This coastal trail offers 10 miles of paved walking, skiing, biking and in-line skating heaven. It also provides unbelievable sunset views. The trail, built in honor of one of the city's mayors and the current state's governor, is joined by many side trails that come from the midtown and south Anchorage districts. Along the way are mile and trail markers and, at Westchester Lagoon (one mile south of downtown), built-in fitness centers with pull-up bars, sit-up benches and general fitness information.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 12:00 AM to 12:00 AMThis trail is good to do many things on, plus it's great exercise. I live in Anchorage, and run on the coastal trail almost every day.
My husband and I were in Anchorage late May/early June and biked this trail one morning. It is a fun ride - really beautiful scenery and we saw at least 4 moose up close and personal (they are evidently very used to seeing humans and couldn't care less that we were there) and a bald eagle. We rented bikes downtown and they gave us a map which was easy to read and follow to get to the trail. Be forewarned: unless you are in really good shape there are some pretty good hills to climb toward the end of the trail. We saw several bikers walking their bikes up the trail at a few points (myself included). But, that being said, the ride back goes much faster and has lots of WHEEEEEEEEEEEE moments!!! Be sure and stop at Earthquake Park for a nice rest and a bit of fascinating history. Take your time and enjoy it. It is inexpensive and fun for the whole family, and if you don't want to do the whole trail you don't have to. There is a nature center at the end of trail that has vending machines. Take plenty of water with you and something to munch on for energy - HAVE FUN!
