Overview

Formed by the powerful action of water flowing over rock, this gorge encloses Linville River for 12 miles. Elevations range from 1,300 feet on the river to 4,120 feet on Ginger cake Mountain. Characterized by steep, rugged terrain and a wide variety of rock formations, the gorge is covered by a hardy population of hardwoods and pines. Linville Gorge is a wonder-filled place to hike, backpack, rock climb, fish, hunt and camp. A camping permit, which is available for free, is required. Contact: Linville Gorge Information Cabin (off Kistler Memorial Highway).

A hike with a great viewby Yahoo | 2005-04-17 22:41:24 |

This is a great place to see nature at its best. The water fall is excellent. There are several different views and trails for viewing. No bad views from any of them. Only problem is that to hike all the trails would require a lot of time and endurance. The trails are of gravel, roots, dirt, and grass so wear boots or shoes with ankle support. If you love a good hike and the outdoors this is for you. Just remember to bring some bottle water and the trail mix you may need it.

Great views and hikingby Yahoo | 2004-09-10 00:26:56 |

Linville Falls is the most accessible attraction in Linville Gorge, but other parts of it offer even more spectacular scenery. Wiseman's View, Table Rock, and Hawksbill Mountain are only a few of them. Most of the gorge is a designated wilderness area, so the hiking is great, although many of the trails are strenuous.
