Overview
This modest turn-of-the-century home is an architectural find in itself, but most notable because it houses the apartment where Margaret Mitchell penned most of the world's most popular novel, "Gone with the Wind." Having survived arson and many seasons of decay, the house has been completely restored. Guided tours feature a wealth of historical and anecdotal information on Mitchell, the house and Atlanta in general. A museum shop is also on site.
I have read the book and watched the movie countless times. It was great to see where the book was actually written. There was only one piece of furniture that was actually hers which was a piano stool which sat in the corner of her bedroom/dining room/sewing room. The rest of her objects were with her nieces and nephews. They rush you through the movie museum at first (they give you 2o min. to look around) and then they take you back through it afterwards. They let you take pictures in the movie museum but not in the apartment. (You can take them everywhere in the apartment building except in her actual apartment.) This was a fun experience but, I was suprised to find out that she did not write ALL of her book there (they moved before she was finished). The only problem was that the gift shop was highly overpriced. Well worth the trip!
It seems as though you get to see the whole house but its just "the dump" or basement. Its where she wrote the book. The guide kep clearing his throat and finally ask for a cough drop......kinda weird...It cost too much too.
If you know a few vocabulary words: Tara, Sue Ellen, Scarlet, Rhett etc.... then I know you will visit Margaret Mitchell's house. It's great how they set the story straight about the book vs. the movie. The historical guide is informative and entertaining. (tip: park at the Margaret Mitchell house) (another tip: rent a car to get around metro-Atlanta because we're definitely -not- DC or NYC)
