Overview
Just 16 miles (26 kilometers) east of Atlanta, this beautiful park's campground offers more than 431 wooded lakeside camping sites and a well-stocked supply store. The campground features complete RV hookups as well as rustic tent sites that start from moderate prices. You must be 18 years or older to rent a campsite. Besides camping fees, you'll pay a certain amount too per car to enter the park. Georgia's Stone Mountain Park offers a multitude of attractions and activities. Call first for availability during the busy summer months. My family & I spent 4 days, 3 nights at this campground in the primitive tent area. Our site was right on the lake overlooking stone mountain. It was gorgeous. The campground offers a water taxi to take you to the park to take part in the activities or just to enjoy the sites. There are boats to rent by the day or 1/2 day at very reasonable costs. The bathrooms are clean and stocked. The tent sites have platforms for tent set up. Also, we left our rubbermaid containers out at night as their aren't any critters (I guess that is due to the stone surroundings). There is a full service store and pavillions for family gatherings. The staff is friendly and patient. I even enjoyed the pool for swimming and sunning while the kids took the water taxi to stone mountain park and enjoyed the activities. We are planning a family outing there over the Thanksgiving holiday. I can't wait!!
I liked everything about it. We went in July and again in October. Both times were very enjoyable. Really, really HOT in July, very high humidity, but not crowded at all. In October, we had a difficult time finding dining at the park. We waited two hours for Kate's restaurant and ended up leaving because we were going to miss the laser show. Had to grab sandwiches at the food stands, and the hotdog vendor ran out of buns and the cheesesteak vendor ran out of drinks. That was the only complaint we had for the four days we were there.
We recently spent a week at the Stone Mountain Campground. We had a very positive experience. We camped in a pop-up camper directly on the lake. We had access to the water taxi which was very nice because we did not have to drive. Majority of the sites are shaded and you are not on top of each other. The only complaint we have is there are no site garbage cans only bags which the squirrels love to open while you are sleeping. We would definetly go back and recommend to others. Very peaceful and well worth the money.
Stone Mountain is a wonderful place to go, whether for the historic aspect, for the beauty, or just for a fun night at the laser show. I used to live outside of Atlanta and this is one of the places I miss most. There's hiking, camping, a railroad, laser show, good food and so much more. A lot of people just go for the laser show and all you have to pay for is the parking. The laser show has music and fireworks. It also bring the genrals carved on the side of the mountain to life. Stone Mountain is a must for your trip to Atlanta!
