This delightful architectural treasure in stone, dates from 1857. It was the home of the Reverend Dr. John Kinder and family and today contains two galleries of his works and memorabilia. While Kinder was a respected churchman and teacher, it is for his prolific painting and photography that he is remembered. His paintings concentrating on architecture and landscape, tell us much about early Auckland and New Zealand, as do the photographs. The house retains its original character, while the garden is beautifully maintained in old cottage style.Open Hours

We loved the fact that whilst looking for the National Museum in Auckland we stumbled accross this amazing historical house, once owned by a Reverend Kinder. Today it is a gallery, exhibiting Kinder's wonderful art in which he depicts history from the local area. We were hosted by a lovely hospitable lady called Trish who revealed more information on the house (guided tour is optional and free!), Kinder himself and his Art. The garden is also worthwhile walking through. So if you are on your way to the Museum make a stop here, it is only a 5 minute walk (at the most) from the Museum. For only $4 p.p. a great experience and worthwhile the contribution to keep this historical house maintained.
