Overview

One of the larger scoria cones in the Auckland volcanic field, Mt. Eden (196 meters) has three craters with extensive storage, defensive and habitation earthen remains. Known by Maori as Maungawhau, or hill of the whau tree, Mt. Eden is the principal trig station for Auckland surveys. Accessible by both road and path, Mt Eden offers extensive views out over Auckland into the Hauraki Gulf and beyond. Have a bus drop you off at the mountain, or take a ten to 15 minute stroll from the train station. Nearby is the Government House, where the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's annual Summer Matinee Concert takes place.

      whow what a viewby Yahoo | 2007-12-11 21:54:20 |

Benn around a bit but this was breath taking. Beautiful place to visit, congrats. Best time in summer with long twilight evenings, when the dark comes the city lights are wonderful fairyland.

      Quite relaxingby Yahoo | 2007-01-20 01:02:29 |

It was an okay place. Take your sunnies and a jacketcoz it kinda gets windy up there... located near the city so it nice to have a bird-eye view of all the places. Take a pair of binoculars... nd tyry o go in the evening and please find out if its open in the night before you go coz you will be able to witness the stars on a clear night. Really nice but boring. Definately not for the adventure seekers. You can go dor a walk which is nice and very much relaxing.

      I liked it!by Yahoo | 2006-11-16 07:27:51 |

my first experience of mt. eden: freezing!!! yes, mt eden was indeed freezing when i first went there. but the city looked simply wonderful; i didn't have words to describe it! i was simply surprised when i found out that mt eden was actually a dormant volcano! my second and third visits weren't too bad. the auckland city views kept stunning me ... i soon knew that the ... erm ... 'hole' in it was actually a religious site for the aucklanders, and that's the reason no one is allowed in it. and of course, for safety reasons also. i would simply love to go back to good ol' mt eden!! -- 17 year old girl from auckland.

      emazing!by Yahoo | 2006-06-08 21:18:13 |

i was there twice, both are in the evening. From here, i can see whole auckland from so high... everything were in front of my eyes with colorfull lights... the feeling come to me was so free... it's a good place for a good city view

      We love New Zealandby Yahoo | 2005-07-23 07:02:06 |

We liked Mt. Eden because it is well looked after and the tourists can excess it fairly easily. It shows great views of Auckland. We did have a little trouble finding it but once there it was worth the effort. We hired a car to travel New Zealand as we have done a tour before but found we didn't see as much as we would have if we had travelled by ourselves. We don't always stop for long morning teas or buffet lunches. We buy our food on the move so we fit more things in. New Zealand is fairly easy to get around even though we found the places aren't always well signed, especially Auckland. New Zealand is still a very cheap place to visit as far as plane fares from Australia and it doesn't take long to get there, which is fantastic. It is a wonderful place, full of great places to see and friendly people. We would recommmend it to any one.
