Wow -- who knew that Austin measures up against Paris, London, and U.S. cultural capitols like New York and Boston? It does, when the yardstick is the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas. Most of the incredible treasures of literature, art and photography are safely stored away, though available to researchers. BUT, they always seem to have interesting exhibits that draw from the world-class collections, and always on view are the world's FIRST photograph (!) and a well-preserved Gutenberg Bible, the first printed book, as we know them. In addition, the place rewards its members with periodic, elegant openings and other events that give a unique perspective on the works, and workings, of this place that seems to have a little of everything for everyone. Plus, it's always free to visit -- a great place to escape the blandness of everyday life and see the world through the eyes of some of the world's most iconic creators (Ansel Adams, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Tennessee Williams, etc.). Note that parking is a potential issue, though there are a few parking garages in the area (Dobie Mall, across the street, comes to mind).
