The slogan states that "everything is bigger in Texas," and if you look at our Capitol, the phrase rings true. Standing a stately 309 feet and modeled after the nation's Capitol in Washington D.C., this is the nation's tallest. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers and constructed of red granite, the Capitol took more than seven years to complete. It was finished in 1888, at a total cost of more than three million dollars, an extravagant price even by today's standards. The perfectly landscaped grounds reflect the languid pace of life under the Texas sun, inviting you for a quiet stroll or a lazy day under a tree. Tours: Daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day. Allow 30-45 minutes for the tour.Open Hours
Mo to Fr from 07:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Sa to Su from 09:00 AM to 08:00 PMIt was amazing ! The biggest state capital and only 2nd to the US national capital ! The main attraction in the city , most definately. You can go inside and walk around. It has portaits of all the governors of Texas . Inside you will find 4 levels . It is huge !
i love because it rocks with all that history a great place for a field trip. it is so fun there. go there at spring break and have fun hang with ur family a have a happy time there
This is the most beautiful building in Texas, if you ask me. We went on a Sunday morning and there were no crowds, which was perfect. We took tons of photos and enjoyed the friendly security guard. Definitely a must-see.
Having worked there for 6 years and now living in DC, I love the fact that the TX capitol is soooo accessible to the public. You walk in, you walk around, you go watch hearings, you walk onto the floor of the House and senate and into the galleries, all without being stopped and told, "you can't go there." Try doing that in the US Capitol. You can't! Its a beautiful building and Texans should be proud that their legislature is truly theirs, and not some inaccessible, secret place.
I loved my visit to the Austin state Capitol! It provided several great photo ops as well as a look into the working of the Texas state government. It didn't hurt that it was free either!
Not the most interesting State Capitol I've been to, the building seems somewhat lacking in history. Which I find odd in a 120 year-old building. The tour guide was really going through the motions. As a Yankee, I found it very uncomfortable to notice the Creed of the Children of the Confederacy plaque in the Rotunda, especially after reading the monument to those killed in the War of Northern Aggression on the grounds. I do have to admit, I am a fan of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", so I enjoyed playing around the columns on the upper floors of the rotunda. Far from the Best Thing to See in Austin.
This experience was great for the whole family. It was wonderful to learn and see so much of Texas history. The Capitol is beautiful and a great activity for Austin visitors or residents.
Our capital is certainly a place anyone can get lost in.Both psychically and in thought. If the walls could talk .Wow what a story they would tell. Our history for our state and nation.our children and visitors have a lot to take in and to understand .It is the best .Updated for our new Texans .Texans have a great pride in there state it shows here.It is the home of our lawmakers and government. It is full of energy and Texans .It is a show in it self.Trust me you do not want to miss this free show .That is continually going on ! What fun.to watch the Texas Democrats and Republicans tangle .Only in Texas.Don't miss it! It is always on ...Take you friends and kids.Go yourself watch.Texans need to watch this.
Take a tour of the interior and can go upto the third level in the dome for the Spectacular views. Well maintained garden the area around the Capitol. Nice view of the congress street from the front doors.
Make sure you go for one of the guided tours.12p.m,2p.m and 3:3op.m on weekends )The tour starts inside capitol(not visitor's center) The tour is well organized and is a great value for people who dont know much about capitol. Also dont forget to visit History musuem
