Overview

For an unusual and fun day out, come to the Makepung Bullrace, held in Negara (about 55 miles west of Denpasar). The buffaloes, chosen for their strength and appearance are decorated with silk banners and wooden bells and have painted horns. Pulling their driver in a chariot, they are first paraded and then a two-kilometer race follows. Needless to say, the winner gains great prestige for its owner. The event is free for attendees, but tour packages are available which include transport, lunch, entry, insurance and guide. The race is held twice a year between July and October, but due to tourist demand, events can be run on request throughout the year (so long as the weather permits).
