Overview

Set almost in the shadow of the Abbey, Tilleys is in tourist trap territory but don't let that put you off. It's an established favourite with visitors and locals alike. Seating is available for 56 and most of it downstairs in the cellar, but there's no claustrophobic atmosphere here; it's casual, fun, but not downmarket bistro style. The basically French menu is unusual in that it offers 40 or so starter courses and desserts but no main courses. This allows diners to eat simply or indulge as required, and the food is invariably fresh and good quality. There's also a sensibly short wine list of 10 house wines at under £10 per bottle.

      Easter breakby Yahoo | 2009-04-14 18:41:47 |

Had lunch here over the Easter break (2009). Nothing special about the food served at this restaurant. Price was OK and service is good. It was exactly what it said on the menu, no attention to presentation and nothing that would want to make me eat here again.

      Total rip off!by Yahoo | 2008-11-25 16:33:11 |

22 of us booked lunch. Small portions and any extra portions were £1.00 each. A 10% service charge was added to the meals and a further 10% service charge added to each order of coffee and wine which I found strange in a lunchtime! There were two waiters who couldn't speak or understand English when trying to order a jug of water! I most definitely would not recommend this place to anyone. I paid £15.50 for a bowl of soup, a small portion of salmon with a side salad which consisted of a lettuce leaf, a slice of cucumber and a quarter of a tomato with a couple of onion rings and a slice of custard tart. No wine or coffee. I found this to be extortionate.

      Great Foodby Yahoo | 2007-07-18 07:50:31 |

The food was amazing, took my partner for an anniversary and we both loved it. COuld not fault the food at all, tasted great and presented very well. This was probably the most expensive meal I have ever paid for (bear in mind I was a university student at the time!) but then you get what you pay for. As far as I can remember the service was fine and quite professional, nothing memorable about the service. It was a little strange sat down in a small basement, but it was nicely different and quite cosy. I plan to go back again next year, and is still the best meal out I have had, and that was over a year ago.

      Dreadful Food, Awful Experienceby Yahoo | 2007-06-10 17:51:57 |

Recommended by our hotel clerk, we went to dinner at Tilley's and regretted the choice. I would never recommend it to other travelers. First, Tilley's is definitely NOT French food; it is less-than-mediocre English food with not so much as a bow to French cuisine. Ambience and service were equally grim. We were seated in the basement room where it was very loud; a table of celebrants talked louder as they drank more. Although other guests complained, staff did nothing. Our waiter was unprofessional and brusque at best, and when he cleared the table, it was "diner" style, clattering the plates as he stacked them on his arm, dropping forks, etc. The food was the worst I had in two weeks in England and that's saying something!

      Would you call this good service?by Yahoo | 2004-10-17 19:18:08 |

Booked table based on their website description of vegetarian options. Ordered "pear, stilton & walnut" salad. Soon noticed that there were no walnuts. Told waiter - no real reaction and, although I waited, nothing happened. I gave up and ate it. As I finished, waiter returned with small bowl of walnuts. Sadly, too late. Mentioned it again to waitress - who apologised. Nevertheless, the hand-written bill still included "pear, stilton & walnut" salad. We queried this with the manageress - who said that she already knew about the problem - but "it was only a few walnuts" !! Really?? - only one of the main ingredients !! Surprised that, knowing the problem, they still included it (full-priced) on the bill - and then objected when we complained. Strange view of service.
