Overview

This beautiful baroque palace was built in 1695 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I as a summer residence for his beloved wife, Queen Sophie Charlotte. Hidden away in the lush Royal Gardens are several smaller buildings: the ornate rococo Belvedere, containing an impressive collection of porcelain; the Schinkel Pavilion which houses drawings, paintings, sculptures, furniture and porcelain by Karl Friedrich Schinkel; and the neoclassical Mausoleum containing the tombs of Queen Louise, King Friedrich Wilhelm III, Emperor Wilhelm I and Empress Augusta.

AWSOME!!!by Yahoo | 2008-03-14 17:25:14 |

This palace was incredible! It was definately one of my favorite places to go in Berlin. It really brought you back in time. The Gardens were lovely. The rooms were smaller than expected, but full of character from the past. I would definately visit here again if I make it back to Germany.

Give one full day to explore this place carefully so that you don't have to run around it. Many parts were lovely, all decorated and genuine. Audioguide was a big help as it told many things. Sadly, some parts were only pictures as the war has left nothing of the old place. To the end the guide gets long-winded so just walk on your own. Park looks lovely from the top and far but as you enter closer, it's a kitch now, field flowers, mock vases, etc. Bad taste. A nearby bus stop where M48 bus takes you to the centre of Berlin in 20min, no need for train.

It was a great place to spend a bad rainy day indoors. Everyone that goes to Berlin needs to visit Schloss Charlottenburg a great interesting palace. I can't wait to go back!

As impressive as it looks in picturesby Yahoo | 2006-10-27 00:41:19 |

I toured Schloss Charlottenburg in 1988 while visiting Berlin. I've always been interested in history, particularly the period of Wilhelmine Germany. The Schloss was well maintained and the grounds were beautiful. While walking in the park, I never felt as if I was in the middle of a big city. I definitely recommend it to others.

I loved the high celings. It had a mystical feeling to it. Everyone would enjoy this attraction and I think the best time to go is during the coldeer months. It is a great place to be in doors.

Beautiful Palaceby Yahoo | 2006-08-31 17:40:34 |

This beautiful palace is set in a magnificant park-like setting. A must see in Berlin!! The palace museum is filled with wonderful art, antiques, etc. Make sure you have plenty of time to explore the palace and the grounds.

Not bad...by Yahoo | 2005-02-26 09:19:29 |

Nice way to spend a rainy, winter day indoors. The New Wing is beautiful, and there are English capabilities, but the old part now houses the silver and porcelain and it is all in German. Plus the old wing was never restored and not as beautiful as the new wing. Mosoleum is closed in the winter, but the gardens and tea house were nice.
