Overview

Museo Guggenheim Bilbao's first exhibit included a collection of over 250 examples of cubist, futurist, constructivist and other 20th-century art movements. There's a permanent collection of late 20th-century art featuring more of the century's best creative talents including young Basque and Spanish artists. Frank O. Gerhy designed this complex with its spectacular curtains of glass, stone curves, titanium and glass walls, walkways hanging from the ceiling, transparent elevators and immense open spaces. Various activities, seminars and workshops are conducted for children throughout the year. There's a bookshop, a gift shop, cloakroom, library, restaurant and cafeteria. Check website for admission and other details.

The building is simply amazing, inside and out. The titanium panels reflect light in different colors, on different sides depending on the time of day. Guggemheims aren't known for being big, monstrous museums but there is definitely enough to see for the good part of the day. I really enjoyed the Arcelor gallery. Do make an advanced reservation either at cafe (excellent value for money) or the restaurant, both run by 3-star Michelin chef Martin Berasetagui from San Sebastian. You won't get a table otherwise.

The architecture and the collection are great. Make sure to walk accross the river and around the museum to get the full scope of this architectural gem. Plan to eat lunch at the less expensive sit down cafe upstairs at the museum, the value and quality of the food was amazing. They even have english menus.

      Beautiful Architectureby Yahoo | 2005-03-28 17:41:03 |

I usually don't like museums, but I found this one particularly interesting. We arrived late in the day and so only had an hour and a half to tour the museum. I would suggest going much earlier though. The value was excellent because they have a student price. Along with the entrance fee you are given a hand-held personal voice tour guide available in 4 or so languages. The beginning of the tour describes the architecture of the building and then you are supposed to tour the modern art inside the building. I loved the building and could not believe how beautiful it was. The amount of time we spent in the museum was just enough for my friends and me since none of us was particularly interested in the art, but I would say the building structure alone was worth it.

      No words to describe it!!by Yahoo | 2005-01-16 15:10:34 |

Not only is the actual building amazing, the art inside will blow your mind and spark your imagination. I never thought I would be so interested at a museum, but the Guggenheim is something to witness for sure. Definitely worth your money and time. Save a couple of hours to walk through the entire thing. Enjoy!
