Overview

Sarehole Mill is a restored Victorian-style working watermill originally built in 1765. Situated on the bank of the River Cole, it features a Victorian engine house and bakehouse and gives an insight into rural life of the period. Sarehole Mill was the inspiration for the village and mill in The Hobbit, since JRR Tolkien used to live in the area and spent much of his childhood by the mill. The mill is open all year round and is a popular destination for school trips.

Brilliant! Beautiful place, friendly, knowledgeable staff, not too modernised and still feeling very English. Very nice tearoom; very cheap, lovely cakes and books to read. The Mill dates from the 18th century and is still working although you can't buy flour there?! Open 11.30am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday.

this was a great trip - have been there many times due to a history project focusing on the mill and it's changes. becuase it's free, you an go there for as long or short a time as you like and not feel as if you've wasted money if you only stay for 15 mins!
