Overview

The "Old Pen" is a view of prison life in the West over the span of 100 years. The castle-like fortress was built in 1870 and was enlarged over the years, often with prisoner labor, until 1973 when a new prison replaced this one. Visitors take a 90-minute tour through solitary confinement cells, death row and the gallows. It is also the site of Idaho's only hanging in 1957. The building also houses several museums within the museum.

i would love to go back!by Yahoo | 2008-12-30 07:06:09 |

my 8th grade class took a trip to boise when we went there it was so amazing i loved the old look it had, i did find some areas a little creepy and i saw a few shadows move, but what can you sespect from a place that old. i am sure there are a few spirts still haunting the place. so over all i loved my tour and i think that every one should try it.

Truly worthwhileby Yahoo | 2008-06-02 16:19:01 |

My team and I went for a team celebration for making our goal. It was quite hot when we went and there are next to no areas of shade. The cell and block houses are a bit too spooky to hang around in for long, and are just as hot as outside anyway. I would suggest going in the spring. Don't miss the exhibits, either. The weapons museum is real cool. You can wait for a guided tour or take a self-guided one. The guides give you all the history. Punishment at its very best. Too bad they don't make 'em like this any longer.

much funby Yahoo | 2008-02-13 19:30:31 |

this was a great outing. The whole family had a good time. Also a good way to teach kids what happens when they break the law.

State Pennby Yahoo | 2008-02-06 08:47:19 |

I like the part in one of the buildings that had a display on how the electricity was generated by the water system through the canals that ran through the city. Maybe our prisons should be built like this one was so our convicts will know punishment for crimes. Seeing the trap door where the executions took place was an eye opener.Death row was a very small area. The walls outside the buildings were very tall making it hot. There was a separate women's building or dormitory by the warden's house. The outside garden area by the warden's house is used for weddings and special occasions. Very ornate old bench surrounded by Black Eyed Susans.

Wonderful Historical Place to Tourby Yahoo | 2007-09-30 21:14:48 |

The tour was wonderful. Led by a very polite young man, his presentation was very informative about the history of this place. Do take the guided tour first. It is the only time you will be able to actually step inside the gallows room. If you are not on the tour, you will only be able to see the gallows room through the Witness Room window. I liked the fact that after the guided tour, you may go back and tour it on your own. An amazing amount of history here, complete with photos! My husband and I loved it and recommend it to all who visit Idaho! I might add here that I had absolutely no experience with paranormal activity while there.

I loved that we were able to give a self-guided tour... it was very interesting to see all the exhibits that were in the different buildings!!

Unique one of a kind experienceby Yahoo | 2007-04-01 05:06:30 |

You can still at time sense the spirits of those past convicts serving time. The gallow area is expecially creepy knowing the fate of many who were there at that spot. Be sure a peek through the mirrored glass window. Very educational knowing we've come a long way with those needing to serve time even as recent as the 1970's. Some criminals should still be forced to serve some of their time there now.

VERY spooky!by Yahoo | 2007-01-06 08:12:37 |

I've been to the Pen many, many times over the last 25+ years, but never had a certifiably creepy experience until last summer. My friend and I were watching the film before heading into the grounds for the tour. I'd already seen it several times, but it was his first visit, so I watched it again. While sitting in the darkened room, I felt finger tips sort of 'tap' down the back of my right calf. I jumped and gasped, and looked at my friend to make sure he wasn't trying to scare me. He had his hands on his lap and was startled by my out burst. We got up and ran out of the room as fast as we could. Once back at the front counter, I told the young woman on duty what had happened. She said that a lot of people have reported strange experiences while in the prison, but I was the first one she had ever heard of having an 'experience' in the auditorium. Geesh, wonderful! I'll go back and tour the Pen again, because it's an inexpensive and fun thing to do, but I don't think I'll ever go back into the auditorium!

loved itby Yahoo | 2006-10-24 18:02:37 |

I loved it.I've never been to a place like this before.I'ts wounderful history.I would go back again. The weather was really nice when I went in Oct.If you like knowing about history, you'll love this.I liked the way you had the chance to read about some of the inmates. And I also liked seeing the old cars and the things they used like washers and dryers.
