Overview

Stretching from the Boise River to the Boise Ridge, this trail system offers hikers and mountain-bikers 75,000 acres of trails. Through the cooperative efforts of several government agencies, private landowners and other organizations, the trail system was created to preserve Boise's foothills. The old roads and trails allow for outdoor exploration practically from downtown Boise. Maps are available from the Boise Parks and Recreation, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Boise outdoor stores. Some of the easier trails to hike include #27 Cottonwood Creek, #28 Crestline Trail and #31 Corrals Trail.

I am 50+ and the first few times I tried these trails, they kicked my butt. After sticking to it and learning more about pacing myself, I can't think of a more fun, healty hobbie. The atmosphere is great. You'll pass people jogging with their dogs, walkers, and lots of bikers, but no motorized vehicles. The people here (I'm from Texas) are about the nicest I've seen anywhere. Overall, Boise reminds me a lot of Boulder in that when you travel a lot, you notice that people love their outdoors here - like Boulder. The people here think it get hot here, but with near zero humidity, they don't even understand that the heat here is nothing compared to many places. You'll love the trails, I guarantee it!

Any visit to Boise isn't complete without getting into the hills. Either biking, running or hiking - there are many trails in the system through a variety of eco-systems including riparian, high-desert and alpine.
