At 38 kilometers long, Moreton Island is one of the largest sand islands in the world, and has the highest dunes, including Mount Tempest (280 meters). Most of the island is National Park and offers beaches, freshwater lakes, wetlands and wildflowers. Fishing, snorkeling, swimming, sailing and surfing are popular, but sand boarding in the dunes is the most exciting. Humpback whales can be seen in the area from June to November and visitors can feed dolphins at Tangalooma Resort. Four-wheel drives are essential for island driving, and accommodation is available at six sites.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 12:00 AM to 12:00 AMBest place ive ever been freshest air, longest views BEST sand 4x4 Tracks ever been to, fish at the beach, great tangalooma bar, fellow 4x4s everywhere, just the absolute best place i have ever been
awesome to take the kids, feed the dolphins, kids 6 & above can ride on the quad bikes, sand toboggining, if thats such a word.great water views. if your looking to take the kids for a super relaxed weekend its a must do.
Staying at the resort will be ideal if you're looking to spend your time on the island just laying on the beach and drinking beer. Though from the resort you can book a lot of excursions, groups are big and most of the time you can end up disapointed - example: snorkelling - group included about 25-30 or more individuals and 45% of these people had no idea how to swim so you can imagine the frustration when you're trying to see the corals on the wrecks and people keep coming on you, hitting and pushing you with the board. Same with the quad bikes, same amount of peolpe which included people who never saw one before in their lives let alone riding one and people like us looking for a bit of fun. You will end up all the time stopping every 2 minutes 'cos someone drove straight into a tree or the wall.. However if you're lucky enough you'll get picked up to drive in the quad track which is a bit more fun than just driving in one straight pile. Food at the resort is disgusting especially breakfast and lunch however for dinner"The Steakhouse" and "Chef's" offer a much better menu but prepare to spend at least $150 - $200 every time you dine in these places for just 2 main dishes, bottle of wine and bottle of water. My advise - go to moreton island and camp, go around and explore the beautiful island, its got beautiful beaches and nice waters, amazing sand dunes and lakes and really good weather. Preferabbly take a 4WD to go around the island or hire one from the island, go snorkelling with a group of friends and don't miss sand toboggan (great fun and also safe for young children) - Great fun. Do some fishing at night or with the tide and cook the fish you catch for breakfast and lunch and dine at the "Chef's" at night but remember to take a bit of cash with you and also if you love wine, it will be better if you order wine by the glass than buying the whole bottle(better value for money) Moreton island offers good fun for the whole family but look for a bit of adventure!!!! Will go back there for sure!!!
Island is beautiful, nice sandy beaches and beautiful clear water. Did some snorkeling and though chilly at first was a very nice experience. Saw lots of turtles and some dolphins swimming around our boat. Only thing i would change about the trip would be to spend more time on the island.
Forget Tangalooma. It's a resort. Go camping, see what nature has to offer. Get the sand between your toes. Morton Island is a 1hr barge ride from Brisbane across Morton Bay. If you can be responsible; hire a 4WD and see the whole island. Camp at Comboruro Point it's great. Visit 'The Desert' (a massive sandblow) at dawn. Go to the lakes. It's all beautiful. But have respect - we want it to stay that way.
