Overview

This monolith is a meeting place for political demonstrations, musical performances and celebrations over victories of the national soccer team. It was dedicated in 1936 to commemorate the anniversary of Buenos Aires' first foundation. It measures 70 meters (230 feet) high and is made of reinforced concrete. In its interior a 200-hundred-step stairway is used to perform maintenance jobs from the top. The obelisk brightens with white lights at night, but the gleams of surrounding neon billboards is what gives the area its unique and colorful glow.

It´s not too tall but a classical placeby Yahoo | 2007-12-09 01:01:30 |

You cannot say you have been at Buenos Aires if you didn´t visit the Obelisco. It´s a classical place at Buenos Aires. Take care to find a right place and position to have your photos. After that, have care with the traffic and you can go to many little cafe´s

This is the best for a family with kids! If you like sight-seeing, or just want to get away from it all-this is the place for you!by Yahoo | 2007-12-02 20:14:44 |

I loved it's culture, food, and friendly people! Great for people with kids. I do think I could have used a map. One should have been supplied for free. In the park, there was no food matching the culture descriptions. All there was was fast food and Chinese cuisines. I had a blast and hope to raise enough money to go back soon! You should definitely go!

Do a drive by....by Yahoo | 2007-02-06 01:07:59 |

Not much to see here unless there's a demonstration going on. Take some pics and head out. You can't go up inside it.

Drive By - Not Necessary to Stopby Yahoo | 2006-09-24 21:19:42 |

The main road in BA is worth taking a taxi up and down. Stopping by the Oblisco, unless you want to read the history first-hand, rather than buying a book, is not necessary. If you're pressed for time, drive by.

once is enoughby Yahoo | 2005-03-24 19:42:11 |

it is a pretty sight to see and a great reference point for travelers, but the truth is its just as pretty on a postcard. there are some great areas around the monument to take picutures with friends and family, but they can be hard to get to due to the heavy traffic on this enormous avenue. even if you have the right of way, dont expect drivers hanging sharp turns to stop for you.
