Overview

When this railway terminal was built in 1929 west of Buffalo's Lovejoy Neighborhood, the Great Depression was about to hit. Despite its art deco majesty, the station never caught on with travelers. It began a slow decline, halted temporarily only by the World War II business boom. The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation took it over in 1997, and the station is re-discovering its splendor, symbolized by the re-lighting of its 9-foot diameter clocks. A photographic history of the station can be found at the Iron Island Museum.

This grand old structure exudes a great deal of sentiment and emotion as it's a monument to itself. From the moment you come up the lot you're struck by what it is, once was. and what the city must have been like in it's heyday. It's a history lesson of changing times in the rustbelt and more recently greed, ignorance and plain stupidity (it was allowed to be plundered and heavily vandalised for some time). There's been a restoration effort in place by some very dedicated people that in the past several years, started to turn the tide of the building's neglect. It's now used for a myriad of impressive events. I would highly recommend attending one of these events and/or a tour.

Terminal Tragedyby Yahoo | 2005-03-11 16:14:39 |

Stepping in to the Terminal you feel like you have to set your watch back 75 years. The stillness and sheer size of the main concourse is a little eerie, but you can't help but walk away enchanted. It's breathtaking. The tours led by Russell Pawlak are informative and engaging. He is a very charismatic speaker, passionate about the Terminal, and very knowledgable. I only wish that the BCT were open more frequently to the public. You can visit the website www.buffalocentralterminal.org for dates and details on the tours.

TAKE A TOUR!by Yahoo | 2004-07-29 19:38:20 |

I went on a 2-hour tour of the Central Terminal a few weeks ago and was amazed, inspired and saddened by what's left of this structure and what's being done to restore it. The head of the restoration group led the tour, and he was incredibly knowledgable. Easily the best $12 I spent this summer.
