One of Cairo's major attractions, the massive Citadel complex dominates the city skyline. Built on a limestone spur by Salah al-Din (Saladin) in the 12th Century, most of its features are associated with Mohammed Ali, the early 19th-century leader who freed Egypt of the Mameluke yoke. The Citadel offers fantastic panoramic views of Islamic Cairo in a castle setting rich in history. Perhaps its most famous tale is of Mohammed Ali inviting 470 Mameluke leaders to a feast in the Citadel palace, only to have them trapped in a narrow passageway upon leaving and slaughtered by his men. Legend says only one Mameluke escaped by leaping the walls on his horse. Within the Citadel complex are the following attractions: Al-Gawhara (Jewel) Palace, Mohammed Ali Mosque, Police Museum, Sultan Al-Nasir Mosque, Military Museum, Carriage Museum, Archaeological Museum, Suleyman Pasha Mosque and Bab el-Azab.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PMI'M A JEW THROUGH AND THROUGH, AND THE CITADEL WAS HORRIBLE. IT LACKED COLOR IN THE ARCHETEXTURE AND IT WAS TOO LARGE. I GOT LOST 5 TIMES. IF YOU WANT A QUICK TOURIST ATTRACTION, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU
i like this place it was the best thing that i seen you should go and see it for yourself and you will have fun because i did have fun and i wont to back to it..
there was like geese flying around and ducks in this place i also thought the brown statue of all the disney characters wus dumb we could see that anywhere but in cario we are supposed to see cool stuff
it's the greatestr ever the beauty of bast building with the best newly service and above all people you can trust they doesn't ask for thing but for you be more comfortable they do
i live in cairo, so i have plenty of time. but if you're only there visiting, don't miss out on the other stuff to go to the citadel. its nice, but it shouldn't be on the priority list. on a clear day, you can get a good view of part of the city. don't waste money on a guide... no tank tops or mid-drifts ladies, it's a mosque.
This was not included in our tour and we took an afternoon and went on our own and I'm so glad we did. We hooked up with a local guide while we were there who gave us a private tour for $30 US. Not only did we go to the old palace, climb the walls of the Citadel, but got a tour of both the Mohammed Ali Mosque and Saloman (sp?) Mosque and tomb. Don't miss the second, mostly unvisited mosque - it is one of the oldest Turkish style mosques in Egypt. Really really enjoyed our afternoon here.
a place you should not miss seeing. Especially if you have a very knolegeable guide
it was amazing and all i had ever expected me and my children loved it recommend it to anyone. IT is truly spectacular!!!!
i think it looked better in the photo than i real life, i also think it was a waste of money because you couldve just read about it!
