Overview
This neo-classical building, which was founded in 1816, is guarded by sculptured lions and boasts of a magnificent entrance hall. Visit the Egyptian galleries and see their collection of exotic mummies. Their art collection includes masterpieces by Rubens, Monet and Picasso, as well as classical statues, delicate oriental fans, illuminated manuscripts and pottery. You can grab a quick bite or a cup of coffee at the Fitzwilliam Museum Cafe as well . Guided tours are available.Open Hours
Tu to Sa from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM, Su from 12:00 PM to 05:00 PMIf you go with children, make sure to ask about the Fitz Family Kits. They are portable boxes with things to hunt for in the galleries. My 6 year old loved them, and we went through all 5 of their different kits on different days. (We were Americans in Cambridge for 2 months.) A woman in the cafe (Alex? Alice?) was also very nice and remembered my son every time we came in.
lovely place the piutures are lovely the shop is ok the prices of it are fine but they had the f word on it so i want it to be looked at it at once
It was a place that had been mentioned by several people during my visit to Cambridge. So one afternoon, I "dropped in" for a quick visit. It was a mangificant structure, the stairs in the entrance were quite grand. The building is a beautiful piece of art in itself. The is such a variety of art that I'm sure there is something that will give pleasure to anyone who visits. There were paintings, drawings, sculptures, original writings, sketches enough to please all. The staff was pleasant and present to answer questions if they arose. The displays were all shown with very complete descriptions adjacent to them. There were several tours of school children, but I'm sure due to the staffs experience, the children were all quite well behaved. And then there was the shop and the tea room...a wonderful experience. I will be sure and tell people about this wonderful place where you can spend quite a few hours and don't plan to "drop in", but plan to spend many wonderful hours.
it was a fantastic day out and i learnt so much in the space of a couple of hours and there was a pleasent atmophere and i felt so relaxed i will definately be visiting again
I first went to the Fitwilliam museum on a school trip when I was nine, yet its collection has drawn me back many times. The egyptian rooms boast an extensive, interesting assortment of artifacts and the art gallery has proven very useful on a number of occasions. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgable, and someone is always around to tell about something specific, or the tours are a great way to get through everything and not miss anything. The staff are also very good with children and can keep their attention throughout the whole tour. It is also a wonderful building in itself, the collection inside really looks as though it belongs there. A great day out for both the young and old, definitely worth a visit.
