Overview

Erected in 1890, the Walnut Street Bridge was the first to connect Chattanooga's downtown with the North Shore. Structural modifications have been made to turn the bridge into what is now a pedestrian walkway. The 1/2-mile span is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world and very popular among local residents. Providing spectacular views of Coolidge Park, the Tennessee Aquarium and the Riverfront, the bridge is available for weddings and special events.

    Best walking bridgeby Yahoo | 2008-06-03 14:27:51 |

It is the best place to walk and a unique feature of Chattanooga. You can see both sides of the river and cross from Coolidge Park to the Bluff View Arts districk and restaurants. Love it!

    What a wonderful unplanned addition to our trip.by Yahoo | 2008-05-20 02:06:51 |

We were in the downtown area and decided to walk across the bridge and checkout he shops on the other side. Unfortunately my camera battery had died our we would have had some of the best pictures of the whole trip on that bridge. The view of Coolidge Park is really good as well as the river and downtown.

    Relaxation and enjoymentby Yahoo | 2008-03-24 01:46:39 |

I use to work near the Walnut St Bridge and I would walk at lunchtime everyday. Sometimes I would walk again when I got off work. Now I am farther out and don't get there as often as I would like but I could not think of a better way to enjoy the day. I love the view and passing people that you can tell are enjoying life!I am praying that God will grant me favor and move me to this area. It is where I feel the happiest and at peace. Elaine

    Free, Fun, and Great Sightseeing!by Yahoo | 2007-11-01 17:06:36 |

This is such a fun place in Chattanooga. It's wonderful for exercise, but there are also great little ecclectic shops and restaurants on the other side of the bridge across from the aquarium. Plus, the park below the bridge is outstanding and so much fun in the summer. The kids love the water features and the carousel. Must do it! Eat lunch at the Mud Pie! Yum!!!

Really nice place to walkby Yahoo | 2007-06-26 17:56:59 |

Even though the scenery is great and the views spectacular, I was a slightly uncomfortable with the number of obviously homeless people sitting along the walkway, others drinking from bottles in brown paper bags, and were even approached for a handout. And this was in the middle of the afternoon during the week. Being from Chicago this was not a new experience for us, just didn't expect it here.

    Gorgeous!!by Yahoo | 2007-06-25 22:46:52 |

It is an awesome place to get outdoors. You can walk over the bridge to shops on the north shore or go to the Hunter Art Museum on the the south shore. It's beautiful and very unique to Chattanooga.

    What A Placeby Yahoo | 2007-05-04 17:10:44 |

I ask my girlfriend to marry me on that bridge. Lucky me she said yes. I will never forget it. It is breath taking and very nice at night as well. If you go through Chattanooga don't miss this attraction. P.S. Take Your Camera.

    Romanticby Yahoo | 2005-10-21 16:08:45 |

We had been downtown walking all afternoon, so by the time we got to the bridge we were exhausted, but our walk over the beautiful Walnut Street Bridge was very romantic.

    You Can't Stop Yourself!by Yahoo | 2005-08-29 16:01:46 |

There is just something magnetic about the atmosphere there! Very rarely will you find it empty, even when it's raining or 25 degrees outside. Whether you go by yourself, with your significant other, your family or a group of friends, there is something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. Along with the breathtaking view, I have seen 5 weddings, 2 amateur comedians and 10 amateur bands or lone musicians pass over it's threshold, much to every onlookers delight. Couples stroll from end to end, repeatedly, completely unaware that anyone else is there. Families rollerblade or ride bikes together and truly enjoy each other's company. As I said in the title: You simply can't stop yourself from having fun on the Walnut Street "Walking" Bridge.
