Overview

This zoo houses more than 6,000 animals in an environment comprising two waterfalls, reservoirs, an open park, camping spots and animal breeding areas. It also offers some spectacular views of the city. It is best to hire a vehicle as it is too big to walk and bicycles and motorbikes are not allowed. Among its recent arrivals are 10 penguins, the first ever in Thailand; gibbons, which are bred successfully; and Chayo, the baby elephant, born at the time of the Leonid meteor shower, who became the symbol of the Bangkok Asian Games.

not so goodby Yahoo | 2007-04-23 11:01:10 |

been there once and we couldnt find the way out i dont think i'd go again. its not like a normal zoo, its very quiet and in the middle of nowhere. they were also doing major building work so that wasnt very good

Pity the poor orang utanby Yahoo | 2007-03-27 08:45:45 |

There is a lot of construction going on, obviously for further improvements. The pandas look happy, the tigers and panthers were great to observe but I was very disappointed with the orang utan enclosure and the poor animal looked bored out of its skull. Overweight, it's hair hanging in dread locks and nothing to keep it amused except humans throwing food at it. It's a disgrace to keep an animal in such obvious misery. Send it to Sabah rehab!

Improvements are wonderfulby Yahoo | 2007-01-29 14:26:34 |

I visited here the first time in June 2004 and it was pretty ordinary are far as zoo's go. I re-visited in November 2006 and I must say there is a lot happening as far as improvements overall and think it is taking great shape. The highlight...hmm well definitely the Panda Bears followed very closely by the "white tigers" which are simply spectacular. The Zoo gardens are very hilly, so expect a real workout unless you take the zoo bus which will take you to all of the viewing areas. I congratulate the Zoo on the wonderful improvements that are currently happening and will visit again in another 12 months or so.

Great timeby Yahoo | 2005-09-15 22:52:57 |

My son and I visited in April but it was VERY hot for us. The Zoo seemed to be built on the side of a mountain. There were plenty of places to buy water and fruit. The people were very helpful.

A Lovely Mountain Zooby Yahoo | 2005-02-10 04:05:49 |

This is not a high quality zoo that you find in Singapore. But, the mountain vistas are quite lovely. Visiting the panda display was a life- long dream. I took endless photos of these evocative creatures. The tuk tuk rides to and from Chiang Mai were great fun! Do it on your own. You don't need a guide. Constance Nanaimo, B.C.

Spacious zoo on rolling hillsby Yahoo | 2004-10-23 02:34:47 |

I always approach zoo's in developing countries with some trepidation, but this is a spacious zoo that sprawls over wooded hills on the edge of town. The interesting collection of animals is reasonably well exhibited. The new panda exhibit is a separate admission price. If you get tired of looking at the animals, watching Thais watch the animals is great sport too.
