Overview

This is one main gates to the old city of Chiang Mai, and a major landmark as well. Each corner and each main gate of the old city faces the eight main points of the compass, with one extra gate on the south side. Tha Pae Gate faces east, and is endowed with the astrological faculty of mula or prosperity. It was first called Pratu Chiang Ruak because it was situated near Chiang Ruak village when it was built in the reign of King Mangrai in 1296. Today this impressive looking Gate is a popular photo-taking spot for tourists.

This is a great place to visit on a Sunday night. The whole street from within Tha Pae Gate turns into a shopping street -- no cars allowed. Many kinds of things are sold there. One can get cheap massages there too. There are restaurants too. And of course, street food. Had a wonderful experience when I visited the place in late Jan this year. The things happening in the middle of the street were fantastic -- an old woman singing a traditional lament, a blind man playing a muted instrument, two young girls performing northern Thai dances (so graceful and flexible!), two young men singing modern Thai songs, a young man playing Western classical tunes on a violin... Quite a "talentime"! NOTE: Heard from locals and friends that the street could get really really really crowded sometimes. I was quite fortunate last Jan. Definitely not for the claustrophobic.
