Overview
Founded in a Highland Park church basement in 1974 by Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry, the Steppenwolf has gone on to become one of the most proclaimed theater groups in the country. In 1991, the company moved to a fully-modern theater just outside of Old Town. Even though they have now hit the big time, they are still committed to developing and performing some of the most exciting and intense theater anywhere. Past productions have included 'Balm in Gilead,' 'True West,' 'A Clockwork Orange' and a heavily praised adaptation of John Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath.' Steppenwolf veterans who have left the city to peruse film and television often come back to their home. You may see John Malkovich, Gary Sinise or John Mahoney, among others. Mo to Sa from 11:00 AM to 05:00 PM, Su from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PMThis theatre company and the theatre itself put on quality plays, some controversial and some timely, but all very entertaining. I have seen 6 plays between two of their theatres and have been satisfied with the quality of the actors, the helpfulness of the staff, and the appearance and suitability of the theatres on everey occasion. This theatre is an important asset to Chicago's cultural and artistic scene.
Looking for something off the beaten path to do in Chicago, love the arts? This is the place to visit for you! The Steppenwolf is a smaller more quaint theatre company compared to the Goodman and many of the larger theatre houses in chicago. The plays are more controversial, but extremely well done. Very talented acting, your sure to recognize many of the stars whom perform in their productions. You'll be amazed looking at all the photo's of your favorite actors which grace their walls! Great regional plays. Not the broadway stuff, but the plays they do offer are quite good! Many are award winning. The actors are frequently seen in other plays, movies and TV.
they screw my ticket and i pay for good seats and they gave me bad seats
I thought that this theater would be full of fun and energetic people who are passionate about theater. Instead, the staff that I came into contact with were unpleasant and unhelpful. I always heard that Steppenwolf was high-caliber, but I did not experience that while there.
