Overview
The privilege of designing this building was awarded to the winners of a design competition held by the Chicago Tribune itself. The firm of Hood and Howell won, and in 1922 they erected this looming tower to house the publication. It looks out over the river and into the growing boom of Michigan Avenue. Most people overlook the stones embedded around the lower walls on all sides of the tower. The stones were collected from around the world, from the Alamo to Chartes Cathedral.
Historic Powerhouse
Truth be told, did not even go into the building. It earns 5 stars just from the outside of the building. A treasure trove of history! Within the outside walls of this building are parts from famous buildings throughout the world. Where else can you go to the pyramids, parthenon, ancient rome, aztec ruins, the gate of saint peters, david's temple, the berlin wall, harvard princeton and yale, the world trade center, the whitehouse, the pilgrims church in england, etc, etc, etc. A historic journey just by walking around the building. Where else can you see so much, and it costs zero to take it all in to boot!!!
