Overview
The University of Chicago has done it all, from the birth of the atomic bomb to the first living-donor living transplant to the birth of sociological study. On a lighter note, Chicago's famous Second City comedy group was conceived at the UOC, and the nation's first Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger, ran the pigskin here. Former home of Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein, Milton Friedman and Saul Bellow, the UOC is rightfully proud that more Nobel laureates have studied or taught here than at any other university. The school was founded by the lake front in 1891 and houses a richly detailed, Gothic style campus. Take in one of many concert programs or events on campus, or take a stroll through scenic Hyde Park, the beautiful old neighborhood that engulfs the university.
The campus has beautiful Gothic buildings. During the summer months these are covered with Ivy and look beautiful. The campus has many, many coffee shops. The Div School Cafe (where God drinks Coffee) and the Cobb cafe are particularly good. Also, the Seminary Co-op book store is one of the largest collection of (readable) books you will find. The Shoreland, one of the University's dorms, used to be Alcapone's place of residence. The campus also has a couple museums, a few million books, and studends that are always engaged in academic conversation.
Go for the architecture alone. I have visited numerous campuses across the country including Yale, Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Princeton, Rice, Duke and more.....and I think the U of C stands perhaps with Yale and Princeton only as the most beautiful campus in America. It has to be seen to be believed. Highly recommended!
Visiting U of C is like stepping into an Elizabethan play.Its gothic and tudor architecture transports you into another space and time.Its easy to get spellbound by the beauty of it all. From ivy laced buildings to mammoth chapels,its a little slice of heaven in a pocket sized place in Chicago's Hyde Park area. A walk thru campus at any time of the year is a nice experience.The Rockefeller chapel has to be the highlight of any tour with its massive arched buttresses and grand colonades.Its especially grand at the holidays when religious pagents and high masses are performed,some from medieval times. Surrounding the campus are wonderful museums,ie Museum of Science and Industry,Smart museum of art,Oriental museum of ancient studies,etc. A viist to the hallowed halls of academia at U of C is a real wonder of a place to play,pray and ponder.
Just look at the photo accompanying this listing. Then go there and stand on that great street, the Midway Plaisance. You'll feel history: Ghosts of a World's Fair and the most Nobel Prize-winning minds in the world! The sheer magnificence of this campus takes my breath away. I love Hyde Park. Not only because most of my family lives there, but because it possesses one of the city's crown jewels of architectural excellence, the University of Chicago. It makes me wish I had chosen college instead of the Army. After your visit to the Museum of Science and Industry or the DuSable Museum of African-American History, please come. You'll love it, too.

I thought that this was a brilliant place. A lot of nice people and buildings.
I lived in Hyde Park and went to the University and although it is a great University, there is no reason to travel from downtown Chicago to see this part of the city. The only two things worth seeing is the museum of science and industry and the frank lloyd wright building(and only if you love architecture.). Furthermore, the restaurants in this part of Chicago aren't even worth mentioning.
