The original location and flagship of a Chuck Muer restaurant empire that now extends into six states, Charley's Crab opened in 1976 and at the time was hailed as an innovative upscale seafood restaurant. After its décor and menu grew a little dated, it was given a half-million-dollar facelift and menu makeover. Historic artifacts decorate deep wood panels with elegant light fixtures. The menu mixes traditional mainstays such as crab cakes and chowder with more diverse, modern fare such as shrimp-and-sausage dumplings, clay-pot pickerel and a tower of ceviche. It's still mainstream dining, but with some welcome diversions.
