More streamlined than anything before or since, constructed of light-weight stainless steel, and sporting an innovative hybrid diesel-electric engine, the Zephyr was a true modern marvel. Today, this museum offers audiences a chance to climb aboard the old beast and enjoy an enlightening guided tour.

Robots Like Us

Come here to see over 200 robots! This exhibit gives you a chance to meet some of the most interesting robots of the mid-twentieth century, which tell a story of a very interesting era: the years between World War II and the first human landing on the Moon. They show how people in the past saw our future. You will also be given a chance to see robots of today and learn about new robotic technology.

The Great Train Story

This 3,500 square foot layout depicts the railroads journey between Chicago and Seattle as it passes through the Midwest, the Plains States, the Rockies, the Cascades, and into the Pacific Northwest. Trains get involved along the way in industries like grain commodities, manufacturing materials, and consumer goods.

The Lunar Landing Module

Located inside the museum's Henry Crown Space Center, this exhibit showcases the actual lunar module used by the Apollo astronauts for moon landings. While audiences are not invited inside the module, it is a tremendous thrill simply to be in its presence. See museum website for photos and a virtual reality tour.

The U-505 Submarine

Step inside an honest-to-goodness, WWII-era German U-boat! The Museum of Science and Industry is proud to invite audiences inside the only German submarine on U.S. soil. U-505 was captured by American forces off the coast of West Africa, after causing a lifetime's worth of damage to Allied naval forces. In addition to touring the boat itself, audiences are invited to learn about the restoration process, study related artifacts, take a peek into what life on board must have actually been like, learn how submarines work, and enjoy a number of other fully interactive displays. Toymaker 3000: An Adventure in Automation

This adventure allows audiences a glimpse into the world of modern toy manufacturing. Where is it done? In colossal factories. How is it done? Automation! Indeed, this exhibit recreates an actual automated toy factory, complete with a dozen working robots on a 2000-square-foot robotic assembly line.
