Hari Raya Idul Adha
2009-11-27 to 2009-11-27
This holy Islamic day marks the end of the annual hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca. The festival is based on Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ishmael. In return for Abraham's faith and submission to God, Ishmael was replaced with a sheep. Muslims throughout the country celebrate the occasion by performing congregational prayers in mosques and large open spaces at about 7am. This is followed by the slaughter of goats, sheep and cows and the distribution of their meat to the poor.

This extravagantly beautiful mosque sits on nine and a half hectares of land. Ironically, President Soekarnoto chose a Christian architect to design it. Construction lasted from 1961 to 1967, but its official opening did not occur until 1978. One of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, Mesjid Istiqlal can accommodate more than 10,000 people and 800 vehicles. It comprises five levels, and its walls, walkways and floors are almost entirely covered with marble from Tulungagung, East Java. Dress modestly, and remove shoes before entering. Women must wear head scarves.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York! Experience New York At It's Finest!JustClickLocal.comAlaska – it’s HOT!
