Zurich's Opera House spans two buildings on the edge of a lake, one that was built in 1891 and a rather less beautiful sister building next door. Within its walls, the Swiss passion for opera really gets an airing, with operas, concerts by the philharmonic orchestra, soirees, matinees, evensong and productions on the studio stage. Each season about 16 premiers grace the stage in the Opera House. Since Alexander Pereira took over the reins the music world has looked at Limmatstadt with rather an envious eye and not least because Zurich's most well-frequented hub of culture boasts its own ballet company. You are advised to book tickets for a particular performance two months beforehand if at all possible. All kinds of tickets can be bought in the annexed building.
