Back to Jane Austen Centre (The) Expensive, waste of time The prices were really expensive and staff were rude. It was a shock to visit after going to lovely Chawton House (where Jane actually lived), they did not have anything that belonged to Jane it seemed like this museum was just cashing in on her fame.
Reviewed by: Peter from on May 24 2009 waste of money and time We visited the museum when the Jane Austen Festival was on and regretted it.Staff looked bored, really expensive and there was nothing much to see. If you climb up to the second floor there is a tea room but this was a complete rip-off and the staff were in filthy white frilly aprons who obviously did not want to be there. Save your money for the Pump Rooms and the Roman Baths.
Reviewed by: Leesl from on Oct 06 2008 Surly staff When we could buy tickets (between the staff gossiping) we went up for a talk. The guide here was enthusiastic but the rest of the museum looks like my great Aunts sitting room. The shop looks sweet but very expensive and most of the products can be purchased elsewhere. Save your money for the Roman Baths.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Mar 13 2008 Excellent i visted the jane asuten centre last week, I discovered so much on Jane Austen and loved every minute of the talk, afterwards i took a trip to the tea rooms where I enjoyed tea with mr Darcy, which was truly fantastic, well worth the trip.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Mar 11 2008 Enlightening! I thought I knew a lot about Jane Austen, her life and works until I visited the Jane Austen Centre.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Feb 15 2008 Don't Bother! A complete rip off. Certainly an informative talk at the beginning, but the house itself and the contents had precious little connection with the lady. And anyway she only lived 5 years in Bath and apparently hated every minute!
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Sep 30 2007 Tea with Mr Darcy Make sure you visit the most wonderful tea room on the second floor. The steps are worth it for the most delicious scones I have ever had! We came back the next day for 'Tea with Mr Darcy' which included finger sandwiches, cakes and scones- shame there was no Mr Darcy!
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Mar 27 2007 Dull Frankly this place is an utter let down. It is all a bit of a fake - nothing really that clever - just a bunch of old stuff and pictures - oh and lots of nick nacks and crap to purchase. If you don't spend enough in the shop you can get fleeced in the tea room up 20 flights of stairs - £3 for a cup of coffee with service so slow that you'll wonder if the tea is imported for each 'mug'!!! We reckon someone 'created' a visitor centre with a few pounds and a tongue firmly in their cheek!
