At a height of 1567 meters (1541 feet), Mont Aigoual dominates the south-west region of the Cévennes. The last high mountain weather station still operating in France is found on its summit. Opened in 1894 the observatory originally supplied data for the project of replanting the slopes of the mountain. In addition to its superb views, the observatory also contains a museum and the surrounding slopes offer the possibility of many walks. The re-forestation project also led to the creation of the Hort de Dieu arboretum about a kilometre from the summit. A detailed plan of footpaths can be obtained in summer from the Maison Forestière.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York! Experience New York At It's Finest!JustClickLocal.com
