India in every sense

Disappointing
We visited the Rajpoot once last year and were impressed with the ambience and the excellent food, both of which forgave the rather high price. Our meal last night was very poor. Chutney and pickles with poppadoms were served with plastic spoons which we thought was odd. We then had a chicken Jhal Noorpuri which promised to contain 'rarely found herbs and green chillies'. There were no green chillies in the dish and the flavours were that of cheap, old masala with the unmistakable harshness of chilli powder. The manager wasn't interested in our complaint and tried to persuade us that it had been made with 'ground green chillies'. We weren't convinced. Our lamb Mughlai was equally poor, with tough flavourless meat cooked in similar, uninteresting spices. Our coffee was of the instant variety and we were given flannels which were almost cold. Students with deep pockets and an unsophisticated palate might enjoy a meal here, but I'd advise those of you looking for complex flavours and good service to look elsewhere. Rajpoot won a Best in Britain award in 1999 and another this year. Prices are roughly £8-10 for a main dish.
