This museum's mostly 20th-century collection contains the world's largest assemblage of works by Marsden Hartley and Alfred Maurer as well as paintings and prints by Georgia O'Keefe, Arthur Dove and Robert Motherwell. However, many critics consider the building itself to be a stunning piece of art. Designed by Frank Gehry, the flamboyant 1993 building is possibly the most talked-about structure in the Twin Cities. The museum's collections are displayed in galleries the 'New York Times' has referred to as possibly the five best rooms for art viewing in the world. Admission is free.

The art in this exhibit is arranged specifically to challenge visitors to think about how museums make decisions, and is a celebration of the museum's move, ten years ago, to its current building. All of the art on display is from the museum, and offers visitors a rare glimpse into many of the wonderful pieces that are not typically available for viewing.

When talking about surface, the first thing that comes to mind is a bare path of stretch or area. However when it comes to terms of art, the relativity concerning to surface changes. According to the different times, the art works have moulded surface according to their convenience and disposal. While the ideologies behind surface may have been something specific during the Renaissance, the post-modern forms of art beg to differ. Surface Quality divulges into this topic with much attained boost and enthusiasm, and openly accepts all terms and definitions to it. The exhibits lets us take a look at surface from every period and point of view.
