My ancestral home
`This was my ancestor's home, the Second Earle of Ormande. The castle is in great shape and you can stay in one of the outbuildings while in Kilkenny. If you have "Butler" ancestors they probably came from Kilkenny or some of the other Butler castles in the surrounding area.

Loved all the History
This is the major attraction of the town. The Castle is surprisingly well preserved and actually combines several styles and purpose driven types of architecture. The first castle was built around the late 1100s by Strongbow - a legendary Norman knight who married a native Irish princess. It was expanded a few years later to include four massive stone towers, solidifying the defensive fortification. Some three or four hundred years later, the south wall was destroyed during a seige by Oliver Cromwell's forces. The Duke that owned the castle returned after the British monarchy had been re-established and saw the damaged wall as an opportunty to rebuild a more Frech Chateau-like residence. After Irish independence, the property was finally given back to the people of Ireland and restored to the height of its spelndor.

Easy listening
I want to congrataulate your tour guide of the Castle, Myself and friend were there at the end of August/early September, we are both parcially deaf, I found it very relaxing to lip read your guides words, she has excellent abilities and forms her mouth in exactly the correct way for hard of hearing people to lip read, this is quite difficult for most people but your guide is excellent, on our guided tour there were some noisy children, which meant that not everything the guide was saying was being heard but I had the advantage of being able to see what she was saying. I have her name but did not want to put it on public view. Please thank her from us. And well done all of you for having the forthought to accommodate us. The tour was fantastic, most enjoyable, we were presented with so many facts in a short time, it was kept friendly and lighthearted with the odd one liner for good measure. Thank you all . Keep up the good work.

Nice Castle
There is so much history in the castle, it is too bad the renovation looks a bit budget. I think it is worth a tour, and it is magificent exterior and so on, but as is the case with many of these castles they fell into decay and were abandoned for many many years because they were too expensive for the families that owned them. They are mid process with the work here, but it is a little budget looking. There is a lovely tour, with a nice guide and I would recommened it, but sometimes... they should just let something fall apart rather than trying to make it a half version of what it once was.
