This is the historic heart of the freedom struggle that took place in South Africa. Soweto (or ‘SOuth WEst Townships’) is replete with schools, squares, cemeteries and other memorials that carry now-famous names. Both ex-President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have homes here. It is recommended that visits to Soweto are undertaken via a reputable firm, for reasons of security. Tour operators offer a variety of packages, most including the Soweto Shebeen (local drinking houses) Route, which allows one a genuine taste of the warm hospitality that fills life in the township. Never dull, this township offers the wonderful experience of seeing how past incidents have impacted on the lives of residents today.
