2009-07-28 to 2009-12-31 Ongoing Black Gold Tour! is an exciting and adrenaline packed Guided tour of the coal mines in the Rhonda Heritage Park. With an ex miner as a guide, you get a chance to descend in to the safe mines where all the equipment is on display. It's made interesting by the additional special effects which imitate a mining explosion. The exhibition then continues to the Fan Room where the social and cultural traditions of the early miners are displayed. Check website for timings.

It's often wet in Wales, but that shouldn't get in the way of a visit to the Rhondda Heritage Park - a coal mining museum based at the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery. You can ride in a cage to the pit bottom and a "thrill ride" is offered back to the surface. Ground level attractions include an indoor period village street, audio-visual displays, art gallery, a giant adventure playground, restaurant and shop. This site is fully accessible to the disabled, even underground, with reserved parking, toilet facilities and lifts where necessary.
