Back to Clifton Suspension Bridge A MUST NOT MISS! HUGELY IMPRESSIVE FEAT OF ENGINEERING BY BRUNEL AND A SPECULATOR LOCATION AND VIEWS - THE REAL HALLMARK OF BRISTOL SET IN THE WEALTHY AND ATTRACTIVE LOCATION OF CLIFTON
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Dec 26 2007 Groovy bridge Arguably one of Brunels greatest achievements, the Clifton Suspension bridge is breath taking. Its a shame so many people choose this location to kill themselves, as the view is beautiful. There isnt much traffic over the bridge so you can walk along it without going deaf like some other bridges (The Golden Gate springs to mind).
Reviewed by: Simon Davison from on Sep 14 2005 History Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed long after his death, the suspension bridge was one of the first of its kind. The bridge was the result of a competition set up to attract designs, and, as with most projects of this kind, went massively over budget. A sum of money had even been invested fifty or do years earlier in order that the proceeds should be spent on the final product. There is a charge of approx 50p to drive accross from Clifton to Ashton Court, Leigh Woods etc, or back ovwer to Clifton. Bristol is built on seven hills, and the bridge spans the highest elevation at the richest part. Clifton was built by money primarily gleaned from the slave trade triangle between Europe, Africa and teh West Indies/Americas.
