Erected in 1477, Lübeck's city gate is not just a fortification; it is a symbol of the city's wealth and independence. The side of the gate facing away from the city appears imposing and threatening, while the side facing the city boasts a beautiful Gothic facade. The Holstentor is now Lübeck's most recognizable landmark and houses the Museum of Local History. The exhibition includes a display of medieval weapons and a torture chamber complete with instruments of torture.
