Audio Guide

There are many ways to spend your time and money at this attractive central square: stroll around and admire the architecture and the murals or even buy an original watercolor from one of the many pavement artists. During the Middle Ages, merchants congregated here to live and sell their wares. When Felipe II established the Court in Madrid, he decided that this square should be reserved for special occasions, and it started to take its present shape from 1790 onwards. The statue in the center is of Felipe III.

Fiestas de San Isidro
May 16th, 2010

Madrid's fiesta par excellence is one of the few chances you'll get to see madrileños take a break from business. They dress in traditional 19th-century costumes and head for the fair to visit San Isidoro's chapel. You'll see theater shows, traditional dancing, pop, rock, folk and flamenco concerts in Plaza Mayor and Las Vistillas. The big day is the Sunday closest to May 15, when the Spanish Army serves an enormous batch of cocido madrileño (tripe stew) for the masses in Plaza Mayor.
