Serving as Thailand's capital from 1350, Ayutthaya was sacked by the Burmese in 1767. During its heyday, the city was a hub for international commerce. Now many come here to explore Thai history as it is a UNESCO World Heritage site with magnificent ruins spread throughout the city area. The best way to experience Ayutthaya is probably by bicycle, but take a guidebook so you know what you are seeing. The city is easily accessible by train or bus from Bangkok.

Ayutthaya World Heritage Site Celebrations
Dec 11th, 2009 to Dec 20th, 2009
Ayutthaya, located 86 kilometers to the north of Bangkok, was the capital of Thailand until 1767, when it was sacked by the Burmese. In 1991, Ayutthaya was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Every year in December, the ancient Siamese capital celebrates its historic past with cultural processions and performances, fireworks, light-and-sound presentations around the city ruins, Thai classical dance performances and concerts. This is also a great time to sample some delectable Thai cuisine from the central plains.
