These gardens are regarded by many, as some of South Africa's most beautiful city park lands. In 1850, the original curator, Mr. Mark Johnson McKen, laid the seeds of what it is today. Specialties include the Earnest Thorpe Orchid House, a Herb Garden, a Sunken Garden and the Garden for the Blind. There is an information center and a tea garden. There are live concerts held in the park regularly, throughout the year, such as December's Carols by Candlelight and audiences are welcome to bring along a picnic basket.

Held at the Durban Botanic Gardens, this event is a celebration of both the holiday season and the beautiful music that is associated with that season. The KZN Philharmonic presents the traditional and contemporary in this festival of Christmas carols. Part of the Concert at the Lake series, this performance has an informal atmosphere. Patrons are encouraged to bring a blanket to sit on and a picnic dinner if they would like.

Bring a picnic to enjoy under the many flowering trees after your tour, or enjoy the parks' Tea Room. This is a great half-day event guaranteed to amaze you with the variety and number of orchid species alone. Your guide will be a park employee who can answer any questions you may have about the plant and animal species in resident. Stop at the information center on your way out and pick up mementos of your visit.
