Fiestas de Carnaval

clock 2009-01-01 to 2009-12-31

The date of the carnival celebrations varies every year depending on the religious calendar and the dates for Easter. They take place over the weekend preceding the beginning of Lent, usually between February and March. On carnival Saturday there is a fancy dress parade in which the city's different peñas (community clubs made up of neighbors or friends) take part. At 7pm various floats set out from Puerta del Carmen to Plaza del Pilar. Music, merriment and humor are the main ingredients of this fun carnival night.

This square is also known as Cathedral Square and is one of the largest in Europe. The area was formerly divided by hedges and cypress trees, but is now a huge open space, floodlit at night. It is a pedestrian square and contains some of the most important buildings in the city: Basilica of El Pilar, the Cathedral of La Seo, City Hall, La Lonja (stock market). Here you can also find the Tourist Information Office, Hispanidad Fountain and a Goya monument. The River Ebro flows regally behind it.
