If it was not for the perseverance of the present owners, this architectural gem might have been lost for good. They bought the island and hotel in 1985 and set about restoring it to its former glory. In its heyday it was associated with the rich and famous, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the famous novelist, Agatha Christie, who found inspiration for several of her books here. Today the island is the site of the deluxe Burgh Island Hotel, a tranquil retreat for all who venture across from Bigbury, either by walking during low tide or by sea tractor during high tide. The hotel has unique art deco features and a very high standard of cuisine. The accommodation is arranged as suites which all have a bathroom, sitting room, and bedroom. Each is completely unique and has a different theme. Amenities on the island include a tennis court, a natural sea-water rock pool, The Pilchard Inn pub, a spa, and even a helipad, should you decide to arrive via helicopter. The hotel also hosts a number of glamorous events including balls, wine tasting parties, and murder mystery dinners. Live music from one of their house bands plays every Wednesday and Saturday. Poor customer service
Unique location, good food and 1920s theme makes for a fun and enjoyable change from the norm. However, our bank holiday break was going extremely well until an innocent request to use the parking space allotted to our room (we did not bring a car) so that my (disabled) father could pick us up on the day of departure somehow (still not quite sure how) incurred the wrath of the hotel's owner. She subsequently dispatched a waiter to inform us (as we enjoyed some ****tails on the terrace pre-black tie dinner) that we were no longer welcome, must depart the island the moment after our checkout (11.30am) and certainly could not have lunch the next day as "they were suddenly fully booked". This most upsetting and surely unnecessary vindictive personal attack marred our otherwise relaxing 4 day stay. Quite how this extraordinary example of "customer service" sits with the £380 per night rate is quite beyond me. We will certainly not return.
