Reviewed by: Tracy T from on Oct 11 2007 location was perfect The location was perfect and the staff went out of their way to assist us with information on ski packages, tours and shopping. The service was great! The complimentary breakfast was a real treat and a money saver. We met other guests from all over the United States and enjoyed visiting with them.
Reviewed by: pradeep from on Sep 28 2007 Great boutique hotel! Lovely weekend in Richmond due in large part to The Berkeley. Everything about our experience was extremely pleasant, from making reservations to checking out. Every staff person was friendly & helpful; the gentleman who checked us in was very accomodating in helping us with left-3-states-away baby items, the valet staff were always willing to give directions & recommendations, the counter staff were patient with questions. The room was large, clean & comfortable. We had a delicious breakfast both mornings in the pleasant dining room. We booked the Weekend Celebrations package & highly recomend it to anyone traveling to Richmond - a great deal in a great hotel.
Reviewed by: amanda lou from on Oct 04 2006 BEWARE! I stayed at the Berkeley for the first time in late August, 2006. Our company had already booked a meeting there in October based upon a recommendation (more on that later..big mistake), so I decided to stay there on a trip to Richmond just to get a feel for the hotel. Room was adequate but by no means exceptional, as was the lobby (I didn't eat in the dining room). Staff seemed disinterested in actually helping you, and almost begrudgingly responded to any of your requests. I asked to see the room where we were to meet (which is on the basement level), and when the door was opened, the individual showing me the room and I both almost fell over from the awful smell (like mold or something rotten). The staff person's comment was something like "I guess we need to keep the doors open to air that out".
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Sep 11 2006 Be Careful Staying Here The Berkeley has a wonderful reputation, but out experience was very different from what was represented. The staff was distant, barely courteous, and mostly absent. The low wattage bulbs in our commodious room were so irritating that we actually stopped and bought a higher wattage bulb for a lamp. We couldn't even see our clothes. But the biggest upset is that we were charged for an extra room that we cancelled well before the deadline on the Confirmation paperwork. As we excitedly checked in, we overheard people in line in a vigorous argument with just such a situation. It never occurred to us that it would happen to us. We didn't find out that we were charged for that room until we got home and it showed up on our debit card statement. In trying to deal with the bogus charge, we have been spoken to very disrespectfully, stonewalled and accused of lying. So, while the building itself is lovely and clean, I would warn you to reconfirm what you are being charged, and bring lightbulbs with you.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Aug 02 2006 Charming with impeccable service If you're looking for a charming, small hotel with impeccable service, then this is the place. It's located in Shockoe Slip, just steps away from several hip restaurants. My room was extremely large with elegant furnishings; it overlooked a cobblestone road...how charming is that! The bathroom is unbelievably large and provides a coffee pot for a guest's morning wakeup. The hotel dining room oozes charm, sophistication, and romance and the food is prepared and presented with careful detail. Speaking of service, while staying there, I requested a softer pillow and was presented with not 1 but 3 to choose from! I was greeted as I returned from a day of sightseeing or shopping and felt truly pampered during my 3 night stay. I will definitely return.
