Artist Jack Hutchings opened Garfield Artworks in the early '90s to provide a much-needed space for artistic expression. Curator Manny Theiner continues that tradition by scheduling a packed calendar of events, including art exhibits, music, and film. The white-walled, high-ceiling gallery is usually filled with paintings, sculptures and multimedia pieces from local and national artists, with openings on the first Friday of the month. In addition to a monthly series showcasing independent movies, the Artworks is also a concert venue, with national indie and avantgarde touring acts such as Wolf Eyes, Ken Vandermark, The Ditty Bops, Calvin Johnson, His Name Is Alive and Don Caballero taking the stage along with various local openers almost every night of the week.
