shanty chic seafood
our first impression (in the wintertime) was that we were entering a Boy Scout Camp. From the parking lot we saw campfires in barrels placed around. I think there was an outdoor dining room under a tent that night. Hostesses greeted us in the parking lot and were cheerful in guiding us to the "indoor" dining area. Seafood and Kosher Franks. Curtains on ladies room stalls. Food disposal barrels in center of tables. Stray cat here and there. Ambiance - yes, definitely. What sort - not sure. Just kind of fun.

Yes

Why? / Why Not?
Sort of fun place to discover and see for yourself. Be adventurous.

Not worth the trip!
This place was highly reviewed, so we decided to stop and give it a try. More outdoorsy and "rustic" than I usually go for. Outdoor eating with lots of insects, did nto care for the food.

A Fun Place To Eat
My husband had the Low Country Boil and really liked it. He also had the steamed oysters. He loved the way they have a hole in the table to throw all the shells in as you eat. I couldn't really have anything, as they boil all the seafood together and I am allergic to crawfish. I did have a cup of soup and some key lime pie.

If you like feeling like a pig at the trough
Look people... if you wanna see gators go to the savannah wildlife refuge. You'll see gators of all sizes and it's very pretty there. I've eaten at the crab shack twice and the only reason we ate there the second time was because we were invited by people we couldn't turn down. It's horrible food that's over priced in an extremely filthy atmosphere. Low country boil? It's just MUSH people! MUSH!

People who enjoy this place have no taste
Absolutely terrible. I read the reviews online, even asked some local lady in a park "what is the best seafood resturaunt on the island". She told me to go to the crab shak, or as my wife now calls it "Crab Crap". Everything was way overcooked, even down to my two year old daughters chicken fingers. If you like alot of food and have no taste buds then this is the place for you.

Ate like animals and loved it!
First of all if you prefer only fried food this is not your place. Everything is either broiled, steamed or raw. The atmosphere is casual to the extreme so come as you are. You will sit outside or in a screened in porch. The food portions are huge so share and dig in! I would recommend the Low Country Boil, Crab legs or their BBQ chicken/ribs. Enjoy!

AWFUL!! JUST AWFUL!! HIGHLY OVERRATED!!!
The fact that it's been featured on TV made me curious. The parking is terrible. The hostesses appeared to be young high school girls. The food was cold. For $16. You get 4 Crab Legs,Shrimp and a corn on the cob. The shrimp were not deviened. They serve everything in disposable dishes. There are bugs everywhere, stray cats wondering around and just sitting there is a nightmare. As people are walking about you feel every bump as if the floor is about to give way.The only thing good about this place are the live gators. Unless you like eating like you're at a camp site. This place just didn't feel sanitary. I would hate to see the kitchen.I left feeling a little sick. There are plenty of seafood places in Savannah. Do not subject yourself to something as terrible as The Crab Shack. I say see the gators, skip the food.

Great place
We've gone to The Crab Shack on every visit to Tybee Island, never have we had a bad meal. The atmosphere is laid back and local. The noise level can be high but just adds to the fact of everyone having a good time. The sampler platters are always more than we can eat.

The " Cheap" Shack
The Crab Shack is a very simple country-type of restuarant. This was our family's first and last visit to the shack. One of the things we noticed while there was the sour smell from the marsh. Their dishes were disposable. The amount of food recieved was not worth the cost of the meal. The large (mist)fans on the walls were rusted and very dusty---all of which floated down on our table. The shrimp came extremely fresh with legs attached. They have live alligators to see and feed. Overall, If you like "pure" mediocre seafood and service the Crab Shack is the best place to go.

Won't go back.
After several nice trips to the Crab Shack our latest proved to be our last. Seated next to a table of people who were drunk, loud, and extremely gross. Complained to waitress who jokingly asked them to tone it down and then proceeded to chat it up with them at every chance. Deviled crab was cold, slaw inedible. Complaints to manager were fruitless.

Wonderful place to go and eat!
Would eat there again in a heartbeat! It has a great atmosphere and Tybee Island is such a nice beach. Children can eat there as comfortably as adults. My son loved it.
