The Zurich Zoo is hailed as a cultural institution of the city, and as one of the best and most diverse zoos in all of Europe. It boasts over 2200 animals and 260 species, coming from all over the world. Especially rare species include frogs, birds, and other wildlife from New Caledonia and South Africa, which are normally only found in their native habitats. Once a year, Zurich's museums and galleries stay open extra late. A single ticket grants night-owls admission to more than 40 museums and attractions, as well as the Zurich Zoo. The price includes free transportation via shuttle bus, tram, ship and even rental bike, if you're feeling sporty. Special lectures, concerts and other live performances add to the festivities, while refreshments provide much-needed sustenance for museum-goers. Can't make it this year? Not to worry; Zurich isn't the only city that does this. Other cities such as Basel and Lucerne stage similar museum nights.
