The National Museum of Prisons traces the history of French prisons from the present day to the 17th century. Located in the former Fontainebleau gaol, the displays are fascinating and include: doors and furniture, forbidden objects, and handwritten letters by famously incarcerated historical figures such as the Marquis de Sade. Guided tours are EUR8 for adults, EUR6.50 children. Call to set up a visit.
