The magnificent ruins of the basements of the Antonin Baths are located on the seaside. As a clue to the size and beauty of the baths, the basements testify to the antique grandness of the Roman Carthage. Here, the inhabitants alternated between the hot bath (caldarium) and the cold bath (frigidarium) or practiced sport in one of the two open-air yards of the palestras. These Roman baths were built during the reign of the emperor Antonin in the 2nd century, and excavated for the first time in 1944. Don't miss the 50 feet-high granite column facing the blue sea. It and seven other columns once supported the ceiling of the huge frigidarium. Also on the site there is a Phoenician necropolis, the ruins of some private houses with their mosaic tiles, and the Dermech basilica, dating from the 4th century. Those who are hooked on history can then pay a visit to the Magon Quarter (avenue de la République, on the seaside) which has been inhabited from the 5th century BCE to the Arab conquest. Admission is TD 7, this price includes access to the other sites of the Archeological Park of Carthage. -N.L.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York!
